On Monday, June 2, 2025, Major General A. Hussein Farhat, Executive Director of the Agency for the Protection and Development of Lakes and Fisheries, held an expanded meeting with officials from the Cooperative Union for Aquatic Resources, associations in the Lake Governorate, and fishermen from Lake Idku and the Mediterranean Sea. The meeting was part of a series of regular meetings held by the Authority to listen to fishermen's problems and develop practical and effective solutions.
Major General Farhat began the meeting by welcoming the attendees and congratulating them, as well as all cooperative associations and workers in the fishing and fish farming sector, on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, emphasizing the importance of these periodic meetings to listen to the demands of fishermen and solve their problems.
For their part, officials from the cooperative union and associations congratulated Major General Farhat, praising his ongoing efforts to support the fishing sector. Mr. Ramadan Abdo, President of the Union, praised the agency's quick response to the fishermen's demands, while Mr. Magdy Marei, Secretary of the Union, pointed out the agency's pivotal role in protecting the interests of fishermen and developing fish stocks.
During the meeting, Major General Farhat affirmed that all decisions made by the state and the agency are in the interest of fishermen and facilitate their work, stressing the importance of complying with work regulations in ports and fishing crafts, and refraining from using methods that negatively affect fish stocks. He announced the intensification of monitoring campaigns to increase compliance with these regulations.
The meeting addressed the problem of silting at the Maadiya port and its impact on boat traffic, with the Major General directing rapid coordination with the Suez Canal Authority and the Engineering Authority to complete the dredging work. The issue of nighttime violations in Lake Idku was also discussed, and the Major General confirmed that boats equipped for nighttime work would be provided, with increased security presence in coordination with the Beheira Governorate, the Security Directorate, and the police.
