
The role of fisheries cooperatives in achieving sustainable development
The fisheries cooperative sector is a key driver of fisheries development, as it plays a vital role in utilizing natural water resources, injecting direct investments, creating job opportunities, supporting Egypt’s food security, and significantly reducing fish imports
Cooperative organizations and their contribution to the national economy
1- The Cooperative Union for Aquatic Resources represents the pinnacle of the cooperative structure, which includes in its membership (106) associations, including (88) local associations, (15) fish farming, (2) joint associations, and (1) general association - and the members of the cooperative associations are estimated at (100,000 members).
2 - The cooperative sector owns all fishing units operating in natural fisheries [seas - lakes - inland waters], including (4329 motorized vessels), some of which have an engine power of more than (1150 horsepower), and (40836 fishing vessels), non-motorized and sailing units, mainly concentrated in lakes and inland waters.
3 - The value of direct investments in the cooperative sector (excluding fish farms) is estimated at approximately (10 billion Egyptian pounds). These investments have helped to attract government and private investments in the field of fishing ports and related services such as (shipbuilding and repair workshops, fishing equipment, ice factories, packaging manufacturing, fish storage facilities, transportation, Marketing services ……… etc. ] which are estimated at millions of pounds and which have not been accounted for.
4. The cooperative sector provides approximately 300,000 direct job opportunities (excluding fish farms), in addition to 1.5 million job opportunities in supporting and service sectors.
5. Fishing vessels operating in neighboring countries under agreements provide approximately 40,000 tons of fish that are marketed locally.
6. The cooperative sector contributes approximately 95% of the total fish production, which is valued at approximately 7 billion Egyptian pounds.
7 - Fisheries cooperatives are responsible for implementing all agreements between the Egyptian government and some Arab countries in the field of cooperation for the exploitation of marine fisheries, given that cooperatives are the only entities that own fishing vessels.
First: Activities and achievements of the Cooperative Union for Aquatic Resources in achieving development:
In the context of achieving the development goals for the fisheries sector, the Cooperative Union for Aquatic Resources has implemented numerous activities and achievements. These activities have included media, awareness, training, and cooperation with executive and scientific bodies and local and international organizations, some of which we present below:
1- In the field of media and awareness:
** Publication of Al-Sayyad newspaper, the first specialized newspaper to address the problems and obstacles facing the aquatic resources sector, as well as scientific studies related to fisheries and the aquatic environment.
The newspaper serves as a link between cooperative societies on one hand, and governmental and non-governmental bodies related to the sector on the other.
