Shrimp farming using saline well water
National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries
As part of the efforts of the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, the Mex Applied Research Station at the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Alexandria officially began the 2025 shrimp harvesting season in Alexandria, which is based on saltwater wells, amid promising results for a good production season and marketable sizes.
Dr. Mahmoud Al-Muzain, head of the Mex Applied Research Station, said that shrimp were cultivated in 7 ponds at the research station this year, through intensive shrimp farming on saline well water, as a pioneering experiment suitable for application in desert lands that do not have access to fresh water, in line with the problem of water scarcity.
Al-Muzain explained in exclusive statements to Al-Masry Al-Youm that the current season is very promising, as the team responsible for the breeding and farming process succeeded in reaching the marketable sizes of farmed shrimp, reaching 30 to 40 shrimp units per kilogram, which is a good production rate.
He pointed out that the breeding cycle took only 100 days this season instead of 5 and 6 months in the past, according to the new method of cultivation this year. He noted that previously we faced obstacles in cultivating on salt water, but today we rely entirely on well water for cultivation and breeding, and it is possible to apply the experiment in desert lands where fresh water does not reach.
He pointed out that a very reassuring marketing outcome was achieved within just 100 days, with marketing volumes ranging from 30 to 40 units per kilogram. He praised the logistical and technical support that the research station receives from Dr. Abeer Mounir, President of the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, to overcome the obstacles facing the work system within the Mex Applied Research Station, as well as the direct supervision from Dr. Ola Abdel Wahab, Director of the Instituteโs branch for the Mediterranean and Northern Lakes in Alexandria, in meeting all the needs related to the cultivation and harvesting process.
